چکیده

Luke Plonsky, University College London Nicole Ziegler, University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa The relationship between computer-assisted language learning (CALL) and second language acquisition (SLA) has been studied both extensively, covering numerous subdomains, and intensively, resulting in hundreds of primary studies. It is therefore no surprise that CALL researchers, as in other areas of applied linguistics, have turned in recent years to meta-analysis as a means to synthesize quantitative results across studies. To date, nearly 30 CALL–SLA syntheses and meta-analyses have been conducted, covering topics from hypertext glosses (Yun, 2011) to synchronous computer-mediated communication (Ziegler, 2015) to game-based learning (Chiu, Kao, & Reynolds, 2012). Despite these individual contributions, the overall effects of CALL on SLA across domains have yet to be addressed. In this ‘second-order’ review, we provide a thorough account of substantive findings and a critical description and evaluation of methodological practices of CALL–SLA meta-analyses. We begin by describing the generally substantial effects of CALL on L2 learning along with an examination of different types of technology such as CALL glosses and computer-mediated communication (CMC). Results of the methodological review reveal wide variability overall and in several practices associated with rigor, transparency, and utility of meta-analytic reviews. At the close of our article, we provide empirically identified recommendations for future primary and meta-analytic research.

Linking CALL and SLA: Using the IRIS database to locate research instruments

To establish an evidence base for future computer-assisted language learning (CALL) design, CALL research needs to move away from CALL versus non-CALL comparisons, and focus on investigating the differential impact of individual coding elements, that is, specific features of a technology which might have an impact on learning (Pederson, 1987). Furthermore, to help researchers find possible expl...

Mobile Devices for Language Learning: Multimedia Approaches

This paper examines the use of mobile devices for language learning. In particular we consider how different multimedia and interface modalities can be used to facilitate mobile language learning. The use of multimedia is considered within the context of Second Language Acquisition (SLA) and Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) theories. In particular, we examine the Interaction Framework...

SLA-enabled Enterprise IT

The SLA@SOI project has researched and engineered technologies to embed SLA-aware infrastructures into the service economy. It has published models, defined architectures, developed an open-source framework and driven open standards such as the Open Cloud Computing Interface. In this demo the application of SLA@SOI in an enterprise IT use case will be demonstrated. The presentation will cover t...

A Call Admission Control Algorithm Based on Stochastic Performance Bound for Wireless Networks

In this paper, we derive stochastic performance bounds under the assumption of exponentially bounded burstiness (EBB) traffic model and exponentially bounded fluctuation (EBF) channel model. Then we propose a measurement-based call admission algorithm providing statistical service level agreement (SLA) guarantee for accepted flows based on the QoS prediction equations for both single and multip...

Re-engaging the interface debate: strong, weak, none, or all?

In the history of SLA research, the relationship between explicit and implicit knowledge has incited heated debate, culminating in, broadly, three disparate positions: (a) the non-interface; (b) the weak-interface; and (c) the stronginterface. In this paper, we re-engage the theoretical debate. Unlike the previous discussions, however, which typically find researchers espousing one position aga...
